To Apply For A Trade Licence You Will Need

To apply in person, you will need:

  1. a current National Police Check (NPC) certificate that is no older than 4-months from when you submitted your application (name and date of birth check only)
  2. proof of identity, including address (such as driver’s licence or passport)
  3. 1 recent passport sized photo
  4. payment for the application fee (see the fees page for details)
  5. your completed application form for individual licence or certificate
  6. a referees’ statement form (if required for your category of work)
  7. an original copy of your qualifications
  8. details of any past compliance issues, insolvency matters, or criminal offences (if applicable)
  9. to provide details of your employment and experience on the application form (for building and specialist categories only)
  10. certificate of eligibility to obtain insurance (if applicable).

Understand Which Licence Or Certificate You Need

 Before applying for a NSW trade or contractor licence, it is important to understand which licence or certificate matches the work you intend to carry out.

Contractor Licence – Individual, Company or Partnership

A contractor licence allows you to carry out, contract for and advertise the types of work listed on your licence.

Contractor licences can be issued to individuals, companies and partnerships.

An individual who meets the required qualification and experience requirements may be issued an endorsed contractor licence. This is generally shown as “Contractor Licence (Q)”, meaning the licence holder is also qualified to supervise the relevant work.

A suitably qualified contractor licence holder may supervise tradespeople, provided they can properly oversee the work, give directions when required and ensure the work meets applicable requirements.

Licence term: 1, 3 or 5 years.

Qualified Supervisor Certificate

A Qualified Supervisor Certificate allows an individual to carry out and supervise the type of work specified on their certificate.

However, this certificate does not allow you to contract or advertise for work in your own right.

A qualified supervisor may supervise appropriately certified tradespeople, provided they are able to oversee the work, provide direction when necessary, and ensure the work is completed correctly and compliantly.

Certificate term: 1, 3 or 5 years.

Tradesperson Certificate

A Tradesperson Certificate allows an individual to perform the type of trade work listed on their certificate while working under the general supervision of someone who holds an appropriate current contractor licence or Qualified Supervisor Certificate.

A tradesperson certificate holder cannot independently sign off on the work. The work must be appropriately supervised and signed off by an authorised licence or certificate holder where required.

Certificate term: 1, 3 or 5 years.

Provisional Tradesperson Certificate

A Provisional Tradesperson Certificate may be available to eligible overseas-trained applicants who hold recognised offshore technical qualifications.

Provisional certificates are available for selected categories, including:

  • Plumbing

  • Water plumbing – fire protection systems

  • Water plumbing – urban irrigation

  • Draining

  • Gasfitting

  • Electrical

  • Air-conditioning and refrigeration

A provisional certificate provides eligible overseas-trained tradespeople with a pathway to work within the applicable NSW licensing framework while meeting the relevant requirements.

Important: A Provisional Tradesperson Certificate is issued for 3 years only and cannot be renewed.
